Scripture for My Child's First Day

A Prayer for the First Day of School

The first day of school stirs up more than your child's nerves — as a parent, you feel it too: the pride, the worry, the strange ache of watching them walk away from you toward a world you can't fully see into. You can't go with them into every classroom, but the God who loves them already is going ahead of them. Here are a few verses for the morning of drop-off, a prayer over your child, and one small step.

Key Bible Verses for My Child's First Day

Deuteronomy 31:8 (KJV)
"And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed."

God goes ahead of your child into the unknown of a new year — they don't walk in alone.

Psalm 127:3 (KJV)
"Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward."

Your child is a gift entrusted to you — and today you can entrust them back to the Giver.

Proverbs 22:6 (KJV)
"Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it."

The foundation you've been laying at home walks through the school doors with them.

Philippians 1:6 (KJV)
"Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ."

God is committed to finishing the good work he's begun in your child — this year included.

Reflection

Every first day of school is a small letting go. From the moment they were born, the whole arc of parenting has been about preparing them to walk into rooms you're not in — and that's exactly how it's supposed to be, even when it tugs at your heart. The fear you feel is just love with nowhere to put itself yet. So put it in prayer. You can't control the friendships they'll make, the teacher they'll get, or the hard days they'll have — but you can entrust all of it to a God who goes before them and never leaves. Send them off covered in prayer, and then trust the One who loves them even more than you do.

A Prayer for My Child's First Day

Use this prayer as-is, or let it guide your own words. There is no perfect formula — God cares about honesty, not performance.

Father, today my child steps into something new, and my heart is full of both pride and worry. Go before them into that classroom and every place I can't follow. Give them kind friends, patient teachers, and confidence that comes from knowing they are loved by you and by us. Guard their heart, help them be a light to others, and bring them home to me at the end of the day. Where I have to let go, help me to trust you with the child you've entrusted to me. Amen.

One Small Step

Before drop-off, place your hand on your child (or text them, if they're older) and pray a short blessing out loud: "God goes with you today, and so does our love." Then release the worry to him as you walk away.
