Scripture for Patience

A Prayer for Patience with Hard People

Some people seem placed in our lives to wear down our patience — a coworker, a relative, a neighbor who pushes every button you have. You can't always change them, and you may not be able to avoid them, but you can ask God to change how you respond. Here are a few verses on patience, a prayer for the relationship that keeps testing yours, and one small step.

Key Bible Verses for Patience

Ephesians 4:2 (WEB)
"with all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love;"

"Bearing with" is honest language — some people we love by enduring them patiently, not by enjoying them.

Proverbs 15:1 (KJV)
"A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger."

Your response, not their behavior, is the part you actually control — and the part God can use.

1 Corinthians 13:4 (KJV)
"Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up."

Love is literally defined as long-suffering — patience isn't extra credit, it's the heart of love.

James 1:19 (WEB)
"let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger;"

A simple, hard discipline to carry into the next tense conversation.

Reflection

Patience with a difficult person rarely arrives as a warm feeling. More often it's a decision, made in the moment, to respond with grace instead of reacting with frustration — and it usually has to be made again the next day. The good news is that this is exactly the kind of growth God specializes in. It helps to remember how patiently God bears with you. The person testing your patience is also someone he loves, someone he is patient with. Praying for them — genuinely, not through gritted teeth — slowly changes your own heart, even when it doesn't change theirs. You may not get an easier person; you can get a steadier you.

A Prayer for Patience

Use this prayer as-is, or let it guide your own words. There is no perfect formula — God cares about honesty, not performance.

Lord, you know exactly who I'm thinking of, and how quickly my patience runs out with them. I confess the irritation and the unkind thoughts I've been carrying. Thank you for how patiently you bear with me, every day, without keeping score. Give me that same patience — a soft answer when I want a sharp one, and the grace to be slow to anger. Where I cannot change this person, change me, and help me to see them the way you do. Amen.

One Small Step

Before your next interaction with them, pray one sentence: "God, give me patience and a soft answer here." Then this week, ask God to bless that person by name — not because they've earned it, but because praying for someone slowly softens how you see them.
