Scripture for a Loved One's Addiction

A Prayer for a Loved One in Addiction

Loving someone caught in addiction is its own kind of heartbreak — the broken promises, the helplessness, the fear of the phone ringing at 3 a.m. You can't control or cure them, but you can pray, and the God you're praying to is in the business of setting captives free. Here are a few verses to hold onto, a prayer for the one you love, and one small step for today.

Key Bible Verses for a Loved One's Addiction

2 Corinthians 10:4 (KJV)
"For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds."

Addiction is a stronghold, and your prayers are not wishful thinking — they are a real weapon against it.

Psalm 107:13–14 (KJV)
"Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses. He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder."

A picture of God literally breaking the chains of those who cry out to him from the dark.

John 8:36 (WEB)
"If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed."

The freedom Jesus gives reaches the deep places that willpower and rehab alone cannot.

Jeremiah 32:27 (KJV)
"Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?"

Addiction can feel unbreakable — but nothing is too hard for the God you are bringing it to.

Reflection

When you love an addict, one of the hardest lessons is that you cannot do their recovery for them. You can love them, set healthy boundaries, and refuse to give up — but the change has to happen in them, and ultimately only God can reach a will that's bound. That can feel powerless. It isn't. Prayer puts the battle where it belongs: in the hands of the One who breaks chains. Keep praying, keep loving wisely, and don't carry this alone — God often works through counselors, support groups, and other people who understand. Loving someone in addiction is a long obedience; let God carry what you were never meant to carry by yourself.

A Prayer for a Loved One's Addiction

Use this prayer as-is, or let it guide your own words. There is no perfect formula — God cares about honesty, not performance.

Father, you know the person I'm aching over, and the grip this addiction has on them. I cannot reach their heart, but you can — pursue them, even into the places I can't follow. Break the chains that bind them, and put people and moments in their path that lead them toward freedom and toward you. Give me wisdom to love them well without enabling the addiction, and the strength to keep hoping when I'm exhausted. Guard their life, soften their heart, and remind me that nothing is too hard for you. I place them in your hands. Amen.

One Small Step

Write your loved one's name on a card and pray Psalm 107 over them each day this week — "break their bands in sunder." Then take one step to care for yourself too: tell a trusted friend, a pastor, or a support group what you're carrying, so you're not walking it alone.
