Scripture for Love

Bible Verses for Love

The Bible says more about love than almost any other subject. Whether you are trying to grasp how deeply God loves you, learning to love others well, or seeking encouragement in a relationship, these passages anchor you in the love that runs from Genesis to Revelation. Below are key Bible verses about love, a short reflection, and a prayer you can pray right now.

Key Bible Verses for Love

1 Corinthians 13:4–7 (WEB)
"Love is patient and is kind. Love doesn't envy. Love doesn't brag, is not proud, doesn't behave itself inappropriately, doesn't seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil; doesn't rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things."

The Bible's fullest definition of love — not a feeling but a steady, self-giving choice. Read it slowly; each line is a description of how God Himself loves you.

John 3:16 (KJV)
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

Love defined by sacrifice. God's love for you was never theoretical — it cost Him everything.

Romans 8:38–39 (KJV)
"For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Paul names every imaginable threat to God's love and declares them all powerless. Nothing can separate you from it.

1 John 4:7–8 (KJV)
"Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love."

God does not merely show love — He is love. Our capacity to love others is itself a reflection of His nature in us.

Romans 5:8 (KJV)
"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."

God's love was never conditional on us getting our act together first. He loved us at our worst — which means His love can be trusted completely.

Zephaniah 3:17 (KJV)
"The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing."

One of the tenderest pictures of God's love in all of Scripture — He does not merely tolerate you, He delights in you and sings over you.

Reflection

We tend to treat love as something we feel and then act on. The Bible reverses the order. "We love because he first loved us" (1 John 4:19) — love begins with God, flows to us, and then through us to others. You are not the source; you are a channel. That changes how you love the difficult people in your life. You don't have to manufacture warm feelings before you act. You love out of the overflow of being loved — patiently, kindly, without keeping a record of wrongs — because that is exactly how you have been treated by God. The most freeing truth in Scripture is that His love for you does not rise and fall with your performance. It held while you were still a sinner; it holds now.

A Prayer for Love

Use this prayer as-is, or let it guide your own words. There is no perfect formula — God cares about honesty, not performance.

Father, thank You that You loved me first — before I ever turned toward You, while I was still far off. Thank You that nothing in all creation can separate me from Your love in Christ. Where I have tried to earn love, or feared losing it, settle my heart in the truth that I am already fully and finally loved by You. And make me a person who loves the way You love — patient, kind, slow to anger, keeping no record of wrongs. Give me grace for the people who are hardest to love, because that is the love You have shown me. Let Your love flow through me today. In Jesus' name, Amen.

One Small Step

Think of one person who is hard for you to love right now. Read 1 Corinthians 13:4–7 slowly, replacing the word "love" with your own name — "[Name] is patient, [Name] is kind…" Notice where it convicts you, and ask God for the grace to love that person one concrete way today.
